TIME TRIAL WINS
TWELVE HOUR RIDES
I have been a member of the following cycling clubs: Carlton & Royston, Royston Road Club (1961), Barnsley Road Club (Club 25 champion, Team Record holder for 25, 50 and 100 miles in 1962), Birdwell Wheelers and the Doncaster Wheelers (1975-1976). I am currently a member of the Birdwell Wheelers. I have been the club's Senior Best All Rounder in 1966, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1978, 1980, 1981 and 1984.

In 1973 at the age of 35 while riding for the
Birdwell Wheelers I was placed 6th in the British Best-All-Rounder Competition promoted by the Road Time Trials Council with an average speed of 24.408mph (over 50, 100 and 12 hours).

In 1973 I was placed 1st in the North Midlands Cycling Federation Best All Rounder Competition with an average speed of 24.726mph (over 25, 50, 100 and 12 hours).

PERSONAL BESTS

10 miles 21 mins 47 secs
25 miles 55 mins 25 secs
30 miles 1 hr 9 mins 54 secs
50 miles 1 hr 50 mins 6 secs
100 miles 4 hrs 0 mins 50 secs
12 hours 264.66 miles
All these times were achieved using a steel race frame, before the advantages gained through the use of tri-bars, aero-helmets, skin suits, clipless pedals, disc-wheels and carbon-fibre frames.

Modern cycling equipment can give time gains of over 5 minutes in a 25 mile (40km) time trial.

I rode to most events on the morning (carrying my race wheels seperately on the bike), and rode back home afterwards. For my best 50 miles time (1 hr 50 mins 6 secs) I rode the 30 miles up to Wetherby for the start, rode the event, and rode home again. For my first 12 hour event I rode 82" fixed gear and covered nearly 248 miles. Most of my rides were done on local courses.
